Sources Cast Doubt on Rapid Breakthrough in US-Iran Peace Efforts
The assessment came after US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that a deal could be reached quickly to help resolve the prolonged Middle East crisis.
“I think we’re … very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal,” Trump told journalists as he was leaving New York after watching a basketball game on Monday.
When asked whether it would be a matter of days or weeks, he said it would take “two or three days”.
According to reports, individuals involved in mediation efforts believe the situation remains highly complicated, particularly because of continued ceasefire violations in southern Lebanon, which they say have pushed the crisis into a more delicate stage.
"(The) Situation is complex and has entered a sensitive phase considering non-stop ceasefire violations by Israel. In given situation, (an) immediate signing of a deal is highly unlikely," a source close to the mediation process said.
Sources added that the immediate focus of mediators is not the finalization of a political agreement but rather securing compliance with the ceasefire and encouraging both sides to return to direct negotiations.
According to reports, efforts are currently centered on reducing tensions on the ground and creating conditions that would allow meaningful diplomatic talks to resume, with hopes that a broader settlement could follow at a later stage.
