Rosatom Alleges Deliberate Strike on Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately targeting the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, saying a drone strike damaged part of the facility’s infrastructure.

According to Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev, the attack struck the machine hall of one of the plant’s units, leaving a hole in the structure of the sixth power unit’s turbine building.

He argued that the use of a fiber-optically guided drone, which is controlled until impact, indicates intentional targeting rather than an accidental strike.

“One could, if I may put it this way, ‘congratulate’ the entire international community – this is the first-ever deliberate attack on the nuclear power plant’s main equipment, with a penetrative explosion and damage to the machine hall,” he said.

Likhachev said the incident reflects what Moscow describes as a pattern of repeated attacks on the facility and warned that such actions pose broader risks beyond the immediate conflict zone.

He added that the situation has not been treated with sufficient seriousness by international actors and cautioned that any incident at a nuclear site could have far-reaching consequences.

Radiation monitoring at the plant, however, reportedly showed no abnormal levels following the incident. The facility stated that there were no casualties or critical damage, while emergency teams assessed the affected area and confirmed the situation remained under control.

The plant’s operator said the strike caused localized damage but did not disrupt core safety systems.

Ukrainian authorities denied involvement, arguing that they do not possess the type of long-range fiber-optically guided drones allegedly used in the incident and disputing the feasibility of such a strike from the opposing side of the Dnieper River.

The International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern over the reported incident, warning against attacks on nuclear facilities and reiterating the need for strict safety compliance.

The agency described the situation as “serious concern” and urged access to the damaged area for inspection, emphasizing that attacks on nuclear infrastructure carry elevated risk.
