Documents Reveal Mandelson’s Remarks on US Ambassador Appointment
Among the disclosures, Mandelson reportedly wrote to then-Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressing confidence in his selection, stating: “I would make sure you never regret it,” as cited in the released materials.
According to reports, additional documents indicate that Mandelson “declined to comply” with a Cabinet Office request to provide access to information held on his personal phone.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said the publication of the files was intended to ensure “unprecedented” transparency regarding the appointment process.
Starmer appointed Mandelson in December 2024 but later dismissed him nine months into the role following further revelations concerning his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to reports, earlier investigations had indicated that Mandelson initially failed security vetting, though the decision was later overridden by the Foreign Office, allowing him to assume the diplomatic post.
