Kremlin Signals Possible Putin–Trump Encounter at China Summit
Following his recent two-day visit to China, Putin informed Chinese leader Xi Jinping of his intention to attend the APEC summit scheduled for November 18–19 in Shenzhen. Reports indicate that Trump has also signaled interest in participating in the same gathering.
A Kremlin aide noted that Putin has confirmed his attendance and suggested that, if both leaders are present, it would be natural for them to encounter one another and potentially hold informal discussions. However, officials emphasized that no agreement for a structured meeting has yet been reached.
The possibility of a meeting in China would follow their earlier encounter in Alaska in August 2025, which marked their first face-to-face meeting since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. That summit did not produce a ceasefire agreement but was described by both sides as constructive.
Since returning to office, Trump has taken a mixed approach toward Putin, at times criticizing the lack of progress on resolving the Ukraine conflict while also acknowledging a positive personal relationship. The two leaders have reportedly maintained communication through several phone calls addressing the war in Ukraine and broader international developments.
Trump has also suggested openness to future travel to Russia and stated he would “do whatever is necessary” to support efforts aimed at reaching a settlement in the Ukraine conflict, amid stalled negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
According to Russian positions outlined in reports, any potential peace settlement would require Ukraine to withdraw from areas of Donbass still under its control.
