1,300 Displaced Families Begin Long-Awaited Return to Afrin
"A convoy of about 1,300 families from Afrin who were displaced in Hasakah set off from the city of Qamishli on their way back to their areas," the directorate said in an official statement.
The return was conducted "under the supervision of the presidential team and the Internal Security leadership in Hasakah and Aleppo provinces, and with Syrian Civil Defense teams accompanying them," the statement added.
The convoy follows several earlier groups that had returned from various locations, most notably Hasakah province and the city of Ain al-Arab, also known as Kobani.
Officials framed the returns as evidence of improving security conditions across Syria and as a humanitarian response to displacement that originated from military operations launched in 2018 to dislodge the YPG/SDF from Afrin. On January 30, the Syrian government announced a comprehensive agreement with the SDF aimed at ending internal divisions and initiating a new phase of national integration.
