Iran Sailors Freed After US Seizure, Pakistan Diplomacy Credited

(MENAFN) Twenty Iranian sailors whose vessel was seized by the US in Singapore's waters have returned home following a diplomatic push that secured their release, Iran's ambassador to Pakistan announced Thursday.

In remarks carried by a news agency, Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam extended formal gratitude to the Pakistani government for its "humanitarian and goodwill" efforts in obtaining the sailors' freedom, noting that the crew had endured "difficult conditions" following the seizure of their ship.

The ambassador said the sailors were transferred from Singapore to Islamabad through diplomatic channels before completing their journey back to Iran within hours.

The development follows a broader repatriation effort. On Friday, Pakistan announced that 31 seafarers — comprising 11 Pakistani nationals and 20 Iranian citizens — had been successfully returned home from vessels intercepted by the US in high-seas operations.

Earlier this month, Washington transferred an Iranian-linked vessel seized by the US Navy to Pakistan, along with 22 crew members, after the ship allegedly attempted to breach the blockade on Iranian ports. Those crew members were subsequently repatriated to Tehran.

The seizures form part of an intensifying US maritime pressure campaign. Last month alone, the US military intercepted at least three Iranian-flagged tankers in Asian waters as Washington moved to enforce a sweeping blockade on Iran's maritime trade.
