Senior Ukrainian Police Officials Detained in Corruption Investigation

(MENAFN) Several high-ranking Ukrainian law enforcement officials have been detained in western Ukraine on suspicion of involvement in a bribery scheme linked to illegal adult-content operations, according to reports.

Among those taken into custody are the police chief of the Ivano-Frankivsk region along with his deputy, as well as deputy police chiefs from the Ternopil and Zhytomyr regions. A fifth suspect, employed in a vehicle unit within the Interior Ministry and previously serving as a driver for a deputy minister, is also accused of acting as an intermediary in the alleged scheme.

Authorities claim the operation involved coordination between multiple agencies, including internal police investigators, and targeted what is described as an underground pornography industry. Investigators allege that officials received regular payments from producers in exchange for protection from law enforcement action.

According to reports, the alleged payments were structured as monthly bribes of approximately $25,000 per production group in return for shielding their activities from scrutiny.

During the investigation, law enforcement reportedly seized several luxury vehicles, high-value Swiss watches, and approximately $510,000 in cash, as stated by prosecutors.

Broader concerns over corruption in the country have also been highlighted in public discourse, with some opinion surveys suggesting it is viewed by parts of the population as a more immediate threat than the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Recent unrelated corruption cases have also drawn attention, including the arrest of former senior presidential aide Andrey Yermak in a separate money-laundering investigation. He was later released on bail after supporters covered a multi-million-dollar amount.

Yermak has been linked, according to reports, to a wider investigation involving an alleged criminal network connected to Timur Mindich, an associate of the Ukrainian leadership who reportedly left the country prior to being formally charged.
