US Jobless Claims Edge Lower, Labor Market Shows Continued Stability

(MENAFN) Initial unemployment claims in the United States declined last week, signaling continued steadiness in the labor market, according to official data released by the US Labor Department.

The number of Americans filing first-time jobless claims fell by 3,000 to 209,000, coming in slightly below market expectations of around 210,000. The previous week’s figure was also revised upward to 212,000.

The four-week moving average, often used to smooth short-term volatility, also decreased, dropping by 1,500 to 202,500 compared with the prior week’s revised level.

Recent broader labor indicators suggest moderate hiring momentum. The US economy added 115,000 jobs in April, significantly exceeding forecasts that had anticipated roughly 65,000 new positions.

At the same time, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, consistent with the previous month, indicating a relatively stable employment environment despite fluctuations in weekly claims data.
