U.S. Treasury Secretary Lands in Seoul for China Talks

(MENAFN) US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent touched down in South Korea on Wednesday, embarking on a diplomatic circuit of high-stakes economic discussions with a senior Chinese official — a prelude to President Donald Trump's anticipated summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Bessent arrived at Seoul's Incheon International Airport via private jet, flying in directly from Japan, a South Korean news agency reported.

His Seoul agenda is packed: the Treasury Secretary is expected to first sit down with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung before pivoting to an afternoon session with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng for elevated trade negotiations — a meeting that carries significant weight as Washington and Beijing navigate a fraught economic relationship.

Following his engagements in Seoul, Bessent will depart for Beijing, where he will join Trump for the presidential visit to China.

His South Korea stop comes on the heels of a substantive leg in Japan, where Bessent held meetings with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, and other senior Japanese officials, with bilateral economic ties anchoring the discussions.
