Rising Settler Violence Raises Concerns Over Christian Community in Taybeh
(MENAFN) Growing attacks by Israeli occupiers are increasing pressure on the Palestinian town of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank, with local leaders and church figures warning that the violence, alongside worsening economic hardships, threatens the area’s longstanding Christian presence.
Located east of Ramallah, Taybeh is regarded as one of the few remaining Palestinian towns in the West Bank with a Christian majority, according to local and church accounts. Residents say the community’s Christian heritage dates back thousands of years.
People in the town say repeated attacks have intensified anxiety among residents, although many insist they remain committed to staying on their land despite mounting challenges.
According to residents, several illegal settlement outposts have been established around Taybeh in recent years, including a new one set up in April. The town is now encircled by multiple settlements and pastoral outposts where members of the far-right Hilltop Youth group are reportedly active.
Residents said recent attacks carried out by occupiers against Taybeh and nearby Bedouin communities involved arson targeting vehicles, theft of livestock, and preventing farmers from reaching their agricultural land.
Palestinian officials have frequently argued that Israeli policies aim to push Christians out of Palestinian areas in order to detach them from the broader Palestinian national cause and reinforce what they describe as a misleading portrayal of the conflict as religious instead of political.
The Rev. Jack-Nobel Abed of the Greek Melkite Catholic Church in Taybeh said the town is “going through a difficult stage” of repeated Israeli restrictions and attacks, especially since the war on Gaza.
“We preserve the faith of this town, which has remained 100% Christian in the West Bank, and we believe we have a mission in this Holy Land, despite the increasing restrictions and attacks we face,” Abed told Anadolu.
