China Blocks Taiwan’s Participation in World Health Assembly

(MENAFN) China announced Monday that it will not approve Taiwan’s participation in the 79th World Health Assembly, scheduled to begin on May 18.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the decision was made to uphold the “one-China principle” and relevant United Nations General Assembly and World Health Assembly resolutions.

“To uphold the one-China principle as well as the sanctity and authority of relevant United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and WHA resolutions, China has decided not to approve the Taiwan region’s participation in this year’s WHA,” he told reporters in Beijing.

He reiterated Beijing’s position that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory, adding that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal authority representing the country internationally.

Guo also accused Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party of maintaining a separatist stance promoting “Taiwan independence,” which he said has undermined the political basis for participation in the global health forum.

“Any attempt to violate the one-China principle and engage in political manipulation by playing the ‘Taiwan card’ is doomed to failure,” he added.

Taiwan previously attended the WHA as an observer between 2009 and 2016 during the administration of former leader Ma Ying-jeou.

While Beijing regards Taiwan as a “breakaway” province, Taipei continues to insist on its independent status.
