Xi to Seek More Stable US-China Relations at Beijing Summit with Trump

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to push for steadier and more predictable relations with the United States during his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, as conflicts in the Middle East and rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific continue to heighten global uncertainty.

The summit, marking the first visit to China by a sitting US president in nearly a decade, takes place amid worsening strains between the world’s two largest economies. Ongoing disputes over tariffs, military rivalry and Washington’s backing of Taiwan have continued to weigh heavily on bilateral ties.

According to analyst Sourabh Gupta of the Institute for China-America Studies, Beijing’s priority in the talks will center on achieving greater “predictability” in relations with Washington.

“China values consistency more than concessions. Trump’s unpredictability is itself a strategic liability from Beijing’s perspective,” Beijing-based analyst Einar Tangen told a media outlet.

Tangen said China’s broader objective remains securing “stability on China’s terms,” explaining that Beijing’s core priorities can be summed up as “Taiwan, trade and containment rollback.”

At the same time, he argued that Chinese officials recognize the meeting is likely to produce more symbolic outcomes than major breakthroughs.

“This summit will produce headlines, not history,” he said.

The discussions are also unfolding against the backdrop of increasing military competition in the Asia-Pacific, where the United States has expanded cooperation with regional allies hosting American military bases, particularly Japan and the Philippines.
