Most Americans Support Quick End to Iran War, Oppose Ground Troops
A survey by Reuters/Ipsos found that 66% of Americans favor a rapid conclusion to the war, even if all objectives are not fully achieved. An Economist/YouGov poll showed overall opposition at 59%, with 28% supporting continued action. An AP-NORC survey reported that 60% of respondents believe US military action has already gone too far.
Opposition to sending troops on the ground is even higher. Across the three polls, between 62% and 76% of Americans opposed deploying soldiers into Iran, with 86% in the Ipsos survey citing concern for military casualties.
Economic concerns are driving public wariness. About 67% of AP-NORC respondents ranked preventing gas price hikes as a priority, compared to 33% prioritizing regime change in Iran. Similarly, nearly 77% of Ipsos respondents expressed worry about the financial costs of the war.
Partisan divisions are pronounced. Democrats overwhelmingly oppose the war, with 88–90% against it, while 62% of Republicans broadly support it. Support among non-MAGA Republicans has dropped sharply from 56% to 33% in just two weeks, while 79% of self-identified MAGA Republicans remain in favor, according to Economist/YouGov. (MAGA refers to the “Make America Great Again” slogan used by Donald Trump in his campaigns.)
Skepticism about diplomacy is widespread. In the Economist/YouGov poll, 46% of respondents believe peace talks are not occurring, 59% consider a settlement within a month unlikely, and only 30% approve of Trump’s handling of the conflict.
Despite this, 65% of AP-NORC respondents still regard preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon as extremely important.
As reported, US and Israel have conducted strikes on Iran since February 28, resulting in over 1,340 fatalities, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
