Pro-Palestinian Groups Plan Protest at Buchenwald Memorial in Germany

(MENAFN) Pro-Palestinian activists announce plans to stage a demonstration at the memorial for victims of the Nazi Buchenwald concentration camp, local media report.

Supporters of the “Keffiyehs in Buchenwald” online campaign accuse the memorial’s administration of promoting “Israeli propaganda” and offering “ideological support for the ongoing genocide in Palestine.” They call for a public protest at the site near Weimar in April, coinciding with commemorations of the 81st anniversary of the camp’s liberation by US troops.

The activists also criticize restrictions banning the keffiyeh headscarf and other Palestinian symbols, as well as the disinvitation of Israel critics from events hosted by the memorial complex.

Rikola-Gunnar Luettgenau condemns the campaign, calling it “a completely inappropriate instrumentalization of the commemoration of the victims of National Socialism for political purposes.” He adds that groups “celebrating and glorifying” the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and denying Israel’s right to exist “have no place here.”

In 2025, a German court rules that the memorial may refuse entry to visitors wearing the keffiyeh, stating it could “endanger the sense of security of many Jews, especially at this site.”
