AfD Warns Germany Relies Too Much on US Gas, Urges Talks with Russia
Following the escalation of fighting between Kiev and Moscow in February 2022, many EU countries, including Germany, sharply reduced Russian oil and gas imports, triggering widespread increases in energy costs across the bloc.
At a party event last Friday, Weidel criticized Germany for exchanging Russian energy for US liquefied natural gas (LNG), which she said is five times more expensive and requires specialized infrastructure.
“We must not become dependent on one country. We must diversify and above all, we must buy where it’s cheap. And that’s in Russia,” she argued.
She also claimed that few officials in the federal government possess “any economic policy expertise.”
Weidel further urged Berlin to “open the doors to diplomatic negotiations” with Moscow to resolve the Ukraine conflict. “We need peace as quickly as possible, and we must stop feeding this war” with weapons to Kiev, she said, adding that Germany should encourage Ukraine to negotiate with Russia in good faith.
According to reports, 96% of Germany’s LNG imports in 2025 are expected to come from the US, while the European Union has approved a plan to fully phase out Russian gas by late 2027.
