Germany denounces Medvedev’s kidnapping remarks toward Merz

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday denounced remarks by Russia’s former leader Dmitry Medvedev suggesting he could envision abduction operations against Chancellor Friedrich Merz, drawing parallels to the recent US operation in Venezuela that led to President Nicolas Maduro’s capture.

“As you can imagine, we have of course taken note of these statements and, as you can also probably imagine, the federal government condemns any form of such statements and threats in the strongest possible terms,” government spokesman Sebastian Hille said during a press briefing in Berlin. He added that the chancellor remains “well protected and secure” despite the threats.

Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, made the comments on Sunday, indicating that kidnapping world leaders, including Merz, could be conceivable.

"The kidnapping of the neo-Nazi Merz could be an excellent twist in this carnival of events," he was quoted as saying by state media. Medvedev also claimed that such an action would not be unrealistic, suggesting there were grounds for prosecuting Merz in Germany and arguing that “it would be no loss, especially since the citizens are suffering needlessly.”

The remarks came shortly after Maduro and his wife were captured in a US military operation on Saturday and are now facing drug trafficking charges in New York.
