Germany Accuses Russia of Satellite Interference
This statement came as he introduced a substantial €35 billion ($41 billion) five-year funding initiative aimed at advancing Berlin’s space capabilities.
Pistorius cautioned that both Russia and China possess the ability to conduct warfare in space, highlighting their potential to “jam, blind, manipulate, or kinetically disrupt satellites.”
According to him, German military systems have already experienced such hostile interference, including deliberate jamming efforts.
He specifically pointed fingers at Russian “Luch/Olimp” satellites, asserting that they have been following two Intelsat satellites, which serve as a vital link for German military communications.
This mirrors past claims from France, where in 2018, then-Defense Minister Florence Parly accused Moscow of using a “Luch/Olimp” satellite in an attempt to eavesdrop on the French-Italian Athena-Fidus satellite.
Further concern over these activities came from Intelsat, which criticized the same Russian satellite for risky maneuvers, particularly when it allegedly neared the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 901 satellites—actions deemed hazardous by the company.
Pistorius is a vocal advocate of the European Union’s strategy to fortify its military stance.
He supports the bloc’s agenda to intensify defense manufacturing and expand its armies, a move that would require significant borrowing among member nations to enhance collective security.
