Somali Army Reclaims Key Villages
Anole and Sabid, both situated in the southwestern province of Lower Shabelle, are critical military points and function as essential connecting routes.
Their recovery marks a notable milestone in the campaign against the insurgents.
Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, the head of the Somali National Army’s ground forces, informed journalists Saturday evening that the offensive named "Silent Storm" had succeeded in driving out al-Shabaab fighters and reclaiming the two strategic locations.
According to Omar, the militant faction aligned with al-Qaeda, al-Shabaab, destroyed the bridge and other essential infrastructure, including a communications tower, just prior to the army regaining control of the villages.
This achievement stands as the first significant triumph for both the Somali forces and African Union peacekeepers since al-Shabaab seized the town of Adan Yabaal in the Middle Shabelle area back in April.
Somalia continues to struggle with chronic instability, with militant organizations like al-Shabaab and ISIS (Daesh) representing the gravest security challenges.
For more than 16 years, al-Shabaab has waged an ongoing insurgency against the Somali administration, regularly targeting both government officials and military forces.
